The Citizen,Lessons for East Africa’s warriors

By Charles Onyango-Obbo
22 June 2012

In recent months, the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) has been in the news quite a bit. The MRC is seeking secession - or is it independence? - for a chunk of coastal Kenya.I am not interested in whether the MRC have a case or not. Rather, I have been fascinated by the business of secession (yes, it is political business) for many years, especially the factors that determine whether it fails for succeeds.

East Africa is interesting, because it seems the ripe region to set up secessionist shop. It has produced 99 per cent of Africa breakaway states/territories of the last 25 years: Eritrea, South Sudan, Puntland and Somaliland. Secessionist sentiment is up and about in Zanzibar, Darfur region of Sudan, the Ogaden province of Ethiopia, and in Democratic Republic of Congo.

These cases tell us that secession is very expensive business. It ...

Midsummer night in Norway

Information about midsummer night in Norway.
As you know already, today's the real summer solstice, but we celebrate the midsummer on June 23rd. Luckily for us this year it is a Saturday, as we have large bonfires and people stay up late. In Danish he was called Hans, which is why we now call it St Hans (sankthans).

Different places in Norway have different traditions. Some places they burn paper witches on the fire, ...

Memory of commemoration MARTYRS DAY 2011 at Ekeberg, Oslo. Reposted by administrator.

This year Eritreans in Norway passed prolonged winter and still the weather is cold. Sun in Norway is not kind. It is nature and people accept it with no complaints.

Norwegians did a lot to make every bodies home to be warm and pleasant. Food is abundant and electronically materials are easily acquired in every home. Having comfort and warmth inside home going outside is not that much desirable. That is why people in Norway prefer to stay home.

In the chilly weather in Norway Eritreans instead of staying indoors walked away to join fellow brothers and sisters in a place called Ekberg in Oslo. It is said that Eritrean are one heart and one people. It is true, when Eritreans rejoice the celebration of their independence, they do it as one people and as one heart.

Knowing that the happiness and rejoice during ...
